Verdell Sumpter, also known as Vi (Mother), was born May 30, 1939 to the late Samuel and Maggie Phillips in Bucksport, South Carolina. At an early age, she connected herself to Salam AME Church in Bucksport. She attended the public schools in Horry County and graduated from Whittemore High School.
Vi met and married the love of her life, Curtis (LD) Sumpter. To this union, one child was born, the late Curtis Sumpter.
The couple relocated to Brooklyn, New York where she was employed at Trust Company, until her retirement.
Later in life, Vi moved back home for a few years and eventually settled in Atlanta Georgia.
On Tuesday, January 26, 2021, Vi transitioned from her earthly home to her new home to be with the Lord.
She was preceded in death by eight siblings: Phennie, Annie Ruth, Carnell, Christine, Hattie, James Culbert, Charles and Wesley.
She leaves to mourn: one sister, Eula Palmer of New York; four brothers: Samuel Phillips and Henry (Danielle) Phillips, both of Alexandria, Virginia, Lewis Phillips and Milton (Mary) Phillips, both of Bucksport, South Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Emma Phillips and Marilyn Phillips; five grandchildren: L.L. Curtis, Nautica, Spencer, Shawn, and Ja'Leah; three great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Tracie Warren; special friends: Barbara Phillips and Sarah Cloud; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
