Mr. Riley “RS” Simmons passed away peacefully on Tuesday November 7, 2023, at Roper Hospital in
Charleston South Carolina. He was born on September 5th, 1943, in Orangeburg County, SC to the late
Martha Simmons of Vance SC.
Riley had a wonderful life as a devoted Father, Loving Grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and a friend to
so many. At an early age he accepted the Lord as his savior and became a member of Liberty Hill Baptist
Church under the leadership of Rev W.W. Wine. Later, he joined Little First Baptist church of Harlem
under the leadership of the Rev. Samuel Palmer.
He received his education in the public school system of Orangeburg County and later relocated to New
York City in 1967. It was there that Riley discovered his passion for mechanics and received his ASE
Certification and had a successful career as a talented mechanic working for Century Transmission. He
worked there for over 20 years until his retirement.
To all who had the pleasure of knowing RS throughout his life, knew of his skills when it came to fixing
cars. You could always find him helping a family member or neighborhood friend with any type of car
issue.
After retiring from Century Transmission, he then joined the New York City Department of Education as
a Bus driver until he relocated back to his hometown in 2008, where he also became a bus driver for the
Orangeburg County School District 3 until his passing. Riley also returned to his home church Liberty Hill
Missionary Baptist Under the leadership of Rev. Roy Lee Durant Sr.
He was proceeded in death by his long-time companion Mary Lee Bennett; his brother Edward (Mary)
Simmons, two sisters Dorothy (Calvin) Snipes, Christen Ladson-Wearing, nephew Doremus Snipes and
niece, Elanie Daniels.
Memories Of Riley will forever be cherished by his children; Terry Jamison of North Carolina, Michael
Anthony Bennett, Tamara (Gregory) Garner of Holly Hill SC., Pat Lucas; seven grandchildren, Tyquan, Chrishawn,
Ariel, Dontazia, Destiny, Fernando and Taylor, one aunt; Mae Simmons, one brother-in-law David
Ladson-Wearing; one God-son, Daruis Daniels; six great grandchildren, and host of nieces, nephews,
cousins, family and friends.
