Rev. Betty Washington Clark was the daughter of the late Leland Washington, Sr. and Ida Kay Collier Washington and stepdaughter of the late Madaline Mack Washington. She was born on January 1, 1950, in Holly Hill, South Carolina. She departed her earthly life on May 21, 2025, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Rev. Clark loved serving the Lord, her family, and friends. Before her extended illness, she often entertained friends and family at her home with her passion for cooking delicious meals and baking. Most importantly, she loved sharing with others.
At an early age, Rev. Clark joined Greater Target African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in Holly Hill, South Carolina where she served on the missionary and stewardess boards. She was educated in the Holly Hill public school system and earned her high school diploma from Roberts High School on May 31, 1968. Rev. Clark furthered her studies at Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education on May 10, 1973. She completed additional studies at Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, South Carolina where she attained a Master of Divinity.
Rev. Clark was a kind and devoted pastor. The members knew her office doors were always open when she served as pastor at Union Cypress A.M.E. Church in Manning, SC; Haynes Chapel A.M.E. Church in Cameron, SC; and Mt. Zion A.M.E Church in Elloree, SC. As a pastor, she was supportive of the Women in Ministry.
Rev. Clark retired from the Dorchester County Board of Disability and Special Needs (DCBDSN) as a program coordinator. She was an educator. She loved working with individuals with special needs. Rev. Clark was preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara Chatman and Ida Mae Morant; and five brothers, Billy Washington, Willie Washington, Leland Washington Jr., Douglas Washington, and James Allen Washington.
Those left to cherish her loving memories include her loving husband of 52 years, Rev. Esau Clark; daughter, Channell R. Summers; one son-in-law, Marquis E. Summers; two brothers, Ricky Washington and Tyrone Gadson; four sister-in-laws, Rosa Washington, Dorothy Clark, Gracie Clark, and Helen Clark; three brother-in-laws, Robert (Dorothy) Clark, Jessie Sellers, and William Leary; grandchildren, Matthew T. Reed, Kaliyah A. Summers, Jasmin C. Summers, and William C. Summers; a special cousin and adopted daughter, Patricia W. Smith; a devoted cousin, Irvin Washington; a treasured cousin/brother, Melvin Collier; two goddaughters Melissa Felder and Courtney Gadson; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
