Mildred Trimble was born on June 20, 1948, in Pineville, South Carolina to the late Wilhelmina Johnson and Francis Guest. She was lovingly raised by her parents, Emma and John Pettigrew, of Pineville, SC, in a nurturing home filled with lots of love and strong Christian values. On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in North Charleston, SC, Mildred peacefully departed this life surrounded by the love of her two daughters and extended family. Mildred professed her belief in Christ at an early age in Pineville and continued to nurture her faith as a member of St. Pineville and continued to nurture her faith as a member of St. Michael AME Church in Jersey City, NJ. She was an active member of the church and often served as one of the coordinators of the Youth Ministry including the youth choir, and the Easter and Christmas programs.
After graduating from Russellville High School in Pineville, SC Mildred moved and built a life filled with love and purpose. She married and was blessed with two wonderful daughters, who were the light of her life. She worked for many years at Summergrade to support her family, and in the process, she formed lifelong friendships along the way.
In 1944, she returned to her beloved South Carolina, where she dedicated herself to nurturing young children as a daycare provider, caregiver, and director assistant. She later served as a housekeeping manger at Sleep n Hotel: perfect for Ms. Millie who was known to keep an immaculate home!
Mildred was fun-loving, and everyone around her enjoyed her free spirit. When you were in her presence laughter was guaranteed, along with the best meals you could ever have. She has a gift for cooking, entertaining and bring people together. Her home was the place family often gathered and it was always filled with love, laughter, music, and the irresistible aroma of her delicious cooking.
Mildred had heart for children- both in her family and in her community. The neighborhood kids knew that ringing Ms. Millie’s doorbell on a hot summer day meant they would surely be treated to an ice pop and warm smile. She loved working in her garden. She found peace and happiness there growing vegetables and planting vibrant flowers.
She got a kick out of the famous oversized sweet potatoes she would grow and then to the family for them to enjoy.
However, nothing brought her greater joy than time she spent with her four cherished grandchildren. Family meant everything to Mildred, and she took every opportunity to create lasting memories with her loved ones.
Mildred was preceded in death by four sisters Pearline Williams of Columbia, SC, Rebecca King of Columbia, SC, Linda Johnson of Jersey Cit. NJ, and Stephanie Brown of South Carolina, and three brothers Benjamin Pettigrew of Cleveland, OH, Michael Johnson of Burlington, NJ, and Larry Johnson, Jersey City, NJ.
She leaves to cherish her memory her two daughters, Sherri (David) Hedgeman of Orange, NJ and, Chavone Trimble of Summerville, SC; five loving sisters, Joann Nesmith of Columbia, SC, Gloria Ladson of Jersey City, NJ, Rosalind (Elijah) Thomas of North Charleston, SC, Sherri Guest of Temple Hills, MD, and Connie Guest of North Charleston, SC.
