Matthew Smalls

Matthew (affectionately known as Mack) Smalls, 62, received his wings on April 15, 2021 in Orangeburg, SC.

Matthew was born in Holly Hill, SC on February 27, 1959 to Frank Smalls (deceased) and Ruby Westbury Smalls.

At an early age, Matthew decided he wanted to live with his grandparents (Benjamin & Eula Smalls).  He was educated in the local schools, graduated from Holly Hill High School and attended South Carolina State University.  In high school Matthew was a stellar in music, he excelled on the drums.  He took that gift and talent on to South Carolina State University and joined the nationally known SC State Marching 101 Band.  He received many accolades and recognitions for his God given gift.  He loved playing the drums

Matthew joined Union Hill Baptist Church in Holly Hill, SC at an early age and used his gifts serving on the Gospel Choir as the drummer.

Matthew received training in the Army as PV1 E1 and his last duty was in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Matthew was a handsome “dude” and was known for his styling and profiling of his “AFRO”, he was so cool!

Matthew was formerly married to Priscilla Keitt of Santee, SC. Matthew was preceded in death by His Father (Frank Smalls), grandparents (Benjamin & Eula “Dolly” Smalls); Herbert “Booglum” and Mary Lee Westbury and sister Delores Smalls Lewis.

Matthew is survived by his MOTHER: Ruby Westbury Smalls of Winston Salem, NC.  CHILDREN:

Shawn Jenkins (Jewel) of Titusville, Florida; April Evans of San Antonio, Texas; Travis Smalls of Summerville, SC; and Taris Smalls of Sarasota, Florida.    

GRANDCHILDREN:  Shawn Armand Jenkins, Adonis R.M. Evans, Jordan Smalls, Jayda Smalls, and Travis Smalls, Jr.  

SISTERS:  Roberta Smalls of Winston-Salem, NC; Merry Denise Smalls of Boston, MA; and Mazie Smalls Mays of Stone Mountain, GA.  

BROTHERS:  Frank “Carl” Smalls of Augusta, GA; Michael Sydney Smalls of SC; Anthony Smalls of Kansas City, MO; Curtis A. Smalls, Craig A. Smalls, and Marvin B. Smalls all of Winston-Salem, NC.  

AUNTS:  R. Marie Smalls of Holly Hill, SC; Mamie W. Goodwin of Winston-Salem, NC; Vernell W. Green of Newark, NJ.  UNCLE:  Prince Smalls (Dorothy) of Summerton, SC. He also leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
