Marylee grew up in Vance and received her education in the public school system of Orangeburg County. She graduated from Roberts High School and after graduation, she relocated to New York City where she continued her education in healthcare. Mary worked at Harlem Hospital and in following years, worked in the health care industry. She retired from healthcare to dedicate her time to raising her children and grandchildren and caring for her family. She was known in her neighborhood (the block) as “Auntie” and “Mrs. Mary” by the young and old.
At an early age, Marylee accepted the Lord as her Savior and became a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. W. W. Wine.
Marylee was preceded in death by her late husband: Sam Bennett; her parents and two sisters: Ernestine Graham and Barbara Marie Joseph.
She was a loving mother, loving grandmother, loving great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. Memories of Marylee will forever and always be cherished by her longtime companion: Mr. Riley Simmons; her son: Michael Anthony Bennett; her daughter: Tamara (Gregory) Garner; seven grandchildren: Tyquan Howard, Chrishawn Howard, Ariel Bennett, Dontazia Dilliard, Destiny Dilliard, and Taylor Garner; six great-grandchildren: Tyquan Howard Jr., Yolimar Howard, Noemi Howard, Frankie J. Howard, and Jacob Howard; sisters: Mattie Pearl Scarborough, Flora (Julius) Whitten, May (Robert) Taylor, Estelle (Wade) Joseph-Allen, Lavern (Mark) Burgess and Mariah Joseph.
Special memories to her nieces and nephews namesakes: Pat Lucas (Lucy), Nathon Joseph (Jeff), Clephane Burgess, Jr. (Thomas), Levar Graham (Mr. Burton), Nyvia Lucas (Working girl), and Alana Burgess (Abby); and a host of cousins, other family and friends.
