Marae Cherelle Montgomery was born on November 8, 1967, to the late Gretchen and Richard Montgomery in Jamaica, New York. She was raised by her grandparents Mattie Lou and Joe Montgomery. Marae attended P.S 121 in Queens, NY and after moving with her grandmother to Eutawville, SC in 1978 where she continued her studies, graduating from Holly Hill Roberts High School in 1986. In 2015 she began her studies in Health Sciences at Mercer County Community College in New Jersey. Our beloved Marae worked for Greyhound Bus Lines as a Professional Motor Coach Operator and Supervisor for well over 20 years.
While Marae lived in Queens, NY, she was a member of Blanche Memorial Church, under the leadership of Bishop Stella Mercado. There she proudly served on the usher board and as a missionary. Upon her return to South Carolina, she joined St. Luke United Methodist Church, under the leadership of Reverend Vivian Lingard. Marae, affectionately known to family and friends as Cherelle, loved caring for people and believed that God had called her to do so. She would always make herself available to anyone in need, even if she was not feeling her best. Marae doted on her family and friends, she loved to dance and was the life of the party.
Betty Boop was her absolute favorite, her go-to song “I Won't Complain” was the epitome of her life. Her biggest blessings, pride, and joys were her son Jayron and her two grandbabies. God in all his wisdom, too wise to make mistakes, to just to error, dispatched his angels to Holly Hill, SC on Tuesday, July 19, 2022. The master summoned our beloved Marae to her heavenly home.
Leaving to cherish her memory is her son: Jeffery Jayron Montgomery (Orangeburg, SC); two grandchildren: Jayron Maurice Montgomery and Sa’Niyah Marae Montgomery, both of (Orangeburg, SC); two brothers: Revell Montgomery (Bronx, NY) and Taron (Nikki) Montgomery (Darlington, SC); five sisters: Teresa Sheard (Bronx, NY), Dawn Twyman (Jamaica, NY), Staciakim Gittens (Florence, SC), Creeana Crosland (Florence, SC), and Richelle Montgomery (Dalton, GA); two great-aunts: Frances Fuller and Louvina Gilliard both of Eutawville, SC; three aunts: Bonnie White (Ellorie, SC), Betty (Mike) Turner (Conyers, GA), and Karen Garvin (Jamaica, NY); two uncles: Gerald Garvin (Orangeburg, SC) and Kenneth Garvin (Florence, SC); two special sisters/cousins: Lenise Robinson (Jamaica, NY) and Tonya (Maurice) Hallett (Brentwood, Tennessee) and a host of special family and friends.
