Mr. James Allen Washington was the son of the late Leland Washington, Sr., and Ida Kay Collier Washington and stepson of the late Madaline Mack Washington. He was born on February 19, 1952, in Holly Hill, South Carolina. He departed his earthly life on March 8, 2025, at the Medical University of South Carolina Health in Orangeburg, South Carolina. James, affectionately known as “Black Boy,” had a love for plants. He held many job titles, which all centered around his love of the outdoors, gardening, and landscaping. He was known for his love of planting and cultivating flowers, vegetables, and trees. He leaves a legacy marked by a profound love for his family. At an early age, he joined Greater Target African Methodist Episcopal Church in Holly Hill. James was educated in the Holly Hill public school system. He had many hobbies which included watching golf on television, listening to music, and enjoying a sweet dessert. James was a father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, known for his infectious smile. Two sisters, Barbara Chatman and Ida Mae Moran, and four brothers, Billy Washington, Willie Washington, Leland Washington Jr., and Douglas Washington, preceded him in death. Those left to cherish his loving memories include his two daughters, Shelia Elmore (Orangeburg, SC), Andrena Griffin (Ladson, SC ), five grandchildren Quentin Elmore, Christopher Griffin, Andrenna Mitchum, Donaven Edwards, and Vernon Edwards; and two great-grandchildren Stephon Pauling, and Laila Elmore; sister, the Rev. Betty W. (Rev. Esau) Clark of Holly Hill; and two brothers, Ricky Washington of Santee and Tyrone Gadson of Holly Hill; a treasured and devoted cousin Irvin Washington of Holly Hill, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
