George Washington Sr. was born on March 27, 1937, to the late Rebecca H. Washington and
Thomas Washington in the Kitfield section of South Carolina. He peacefully departed this life on
Sunday, December 29, 2024, at Prisma Baptist Hospital in Columbia, SC.
From an early age, George was taught the word of God and became a member of the old Wesley
Church. He later attended Wesley United Methodist Church when he was able, and his faith
remained a guiding light throughout his life.
George received his education in the schools of Berkeley County, and later, he attended Claflin
University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management. While at Claflin, he
also pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and he was proud to be a brother of the Master Masons
during his earlier years.
George met his beloved wife, Earnestine K. Washington, and they were married for 36 years,
raising four wonderful children. Throughout his career, he worked with the USAF Exchange and
Oxford Building Services, where he served as a supervisor until his retirement.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Rebecca H. and Thomas Washington; his loving
wife, Earnestine K. Washington; his brothers, Frank and Willie Washington; his sisters, Blanche
Washington and Gloria Forte; and his son, George Washington Jr.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory: son, Carlton Washington, daughters, Arlene (Roy)
Houston and Jacquetta W. Cottman, brothers, Thomas J. Richardson and T.J. McKelvey, sisters,
Mattie L. Mazyck and Mildred Vandergraff , sisters-in-law, Martha Lee Smith, Shirley Coles,
Thelma Vanish, Barbara Washington, and Carol Kelly, brother-in-law, Peter Kelly,
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends who will
forever hold him in their hearts.
