On January 2, 1981, I gave birth to Orangeburg New Year's baby. It was a beautiful experience. This is when the sun rose on the life of Charles Antawn “Poop Bear” Smalls. He is the son of Rev. Dr. Lee Vinnie Smalls and the Grandson of the late Mr. Morris Smalls, Sr. and Mrs. Daisy Smalls. On November 17, 2023, God saw fit to call His son home to give him peace and solace from his works.
Charles affectionately called Punky Ninny, Pooh Bear, and “Tupac”, lived a vibrant, full, exciting, and wonderful life. Charles's life was built and centered around the love of family and friends. Charles enjoyed sharing love and compassion with everyone who graced his presence. Charles grew up in an area we call affectionately the PT, better known as the Prezzytown in Holly Hill, S.C. Charles was a cheerful jokester and a happy young man. He enjoyed cooking, riding bikes and four-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends, especially his children whom he absolutely adores.
Charles became a member of Rock Hill AME Church at an early age. Whereas, he was a part of the Church School. He actively participated in the Church school discussions. For the Word says we all fall short of God’s Glory, but Charles never forgot who he was and Whose he was. God remained an important part of Charles's life.
Charles was educated in the public schools of Orangeburg County School District #3. Charles was a candidate within the Class of 1999, but Charles actually obtained his GED from Frankfort, Kentucky in 1999. Charles continued to educate himself further by attending Orangeburg-Technical College earning an Associate Degree in Industrial Electrician Technology. Later on, he studied at South Carolina State University for one year and two years at EPCI in the area of Engineering. Charles was a former employer at Owens Corning in Anderson S.C. for five years.
Charles was and still is the Apple of my Eye and my Heart. He leaves to cherish his sweet memories: His loving and devoted Mother Rev. Dr. Lee Vinnie Smalls, Grandmother Mrs. Daisy Small, four brothers Eugene (Poopie) and Julian (Goodie) Young, Derrick Moultrie and Kevin Wright; one daughter Zyairah Aniviyah Council, North Charleston S.C., two sons Kahleil Amauri Smalls and Ethan Tyler (little Charles) Smalls, Holly Hill S.C. His Loving Aunts and Uncles Mary Lou (Benjamin) Thompson Sr., Holly Hill, S.C., Morris (Shirley) Small Jr., Santee S.C. Jacqueline (Cleveland) Cordes, Summerville, S.C., Bookhart Tee (Queenester) Small, Vance S.C., Gwendolyn (Bobby) Prioleau, Eutawville S.C., Julia (Eugene) Young, Orangeburg S.C., Great Auntie Mrs. Mary Jane Brown Holly Hill, S.C., two nieces, one nephew and a host of brothers and sisters, cousins, and friends.
