Mother Rena King affectionately known as “Gerty” was born on March 22, 1922 in Eutawville, South Carolina to the late Robert and Elizabeth Wright. She grew up in Eutawville and attended the public schools of Orangeburg County. At an early age, she became a member of Springfield Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Senior Choir and later moved to Newark, NJ for a period of time and then relocated back to Eutawville, SC.
She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Robert King, Sr. To this union, five children were born. Two of her sons, Willie and Leon, preceded her in death.
Mother Rena, was very passionate about her family. She instilled an abundance of knowledge and wisdom into the lives of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, great-great-great-grandchildren and everyone that came in contact with her.
God called His daughter’s name and she answered Him on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Orangeburg Regional Medical Center after a brief Illness.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories: two sons: Jell Jamison of Orangeburg, SC and Robert (Evelyn) King, Jr. of Eutawville, SC; one daughter: Elizabeth Johnson of Newark, NJ; a grandchild that she raised as a daughter: Annette Gilmore of Eutawville, SC; thirty-four grandchildren; ninety-three great-grandchildren, ninety-one great-great grandchildren, six great-great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
